Fernando Alonso pipped Sebastian Vettel to the finish line in the night race at the Marina Bay street circuit to win the Singapore GP. Mark Webber, who started fifth, made a risky strategy work by Red Bull to finish on the podium to retain his championship lead to the chagrin of Lewis Hamilton, who retired after colliding with Webber. The final championship contender, Jenson Button, was forced to settle for fourth. The race spanned two hours, and the drivers provided an entertaining spectacle in exhausting, humid conditions. Here are some findings from the race weekend.

Alonso Gains Further Momentum in F1 Drivers’ Championship

He might not be everyone’s cup of tea from the events in Hockenheim, but this weekend showed that Alonso has a car that can be competitive in slower circuits like Singapore, as well as the faster ones such as Monza. He snuffed pole position away from Vettel’s grasp in Saturday’s qualifying, and that proved to be the key ingredient to his race victory. Track position was paramount as he fended off, quite comfortably, Vettel’s attack.

Alonso matched Vettel’s relentless pace throughout as the two broke away from the McLarens of Hamilton and Button, and more importantly Webber. After building a sufficient gap to the rest of the field, Alonso pitted, coincidently, in the same lap as Vettel on lap 29 and remained in front to the chequered flag. Despite the victory, Ferrari are known to have said that they will not be competitive in the next race in Suzuka. However, if Alonso picks up a good haul of points in Japan, then there is every possibility his consistency towards the back end of the season may just win the championship.
