Oregon State Unemployment Office

According to the British Government's Office for National Statistics , the figures for unemployment in Britain for the three months to August 2010 show that 2.45 million people are currently without work, which amounts to an unemployment rate of 7.7 per cent. The number of employment vacancies for the three months leading to September 2010 was 459,000. A number of economic factors contribute to this situation, but there is also one factor that goes beyond economic decisions, being institutional, and this is European Union (EU) legislation.

Immigration to Britain

The Office for National Statistics indicates Britain's population in 2009 at 61.8 million, up by 400.000 on the previous year. The same source shows that in 2009, the average age of the population in Britain was 39.5 years, up from 37.3 in 1999. The increase of the average age within the lapse of a decade does not suggest a natural increase of the population, and so the population's 400.000 more people within one year from 2008 to 2009 indicates a constant rate of immigration into Britain.

According to the online website The Free Library by Farlex, from the beginning of 1995 to the end of 2008, the number of immigrants of working age rose from 2.9 to 5.4 million. Within this same period the number of people of working age who were born in Britain grew by around 500,000. The statistics show that the constant influx of immigration to Britain over the years has a significant influence on the employment market. Comparing the statistics on immigration with those relating to unemployment, the conclusion is that immigration does affect the rate of unemployment in the UK.
