Entering the helping profession as a school counselor in New York City requires specialized training in counseling. The Department of Education of New York City has identified three different paths to becoming a school counselor. The first is through completing an accredited counseling program. The next path requires a bachelor degree with additional training in counseling. The last route to school counseling in New York City is through certification in another state.

Graduate Classes Required

All three paths to counselor certification in New York City require graduate level courses. Approved counseling programs will cover the following subject areas: theories of counseling, human growth and development, educational research, group counseling, career development, professional orientation, assessment, and a practicum or internship.

Graduate Degree

The first option for prospective school counselors in New York City is completing a counseling program that is approved by the New York City Department of Education. Approved programs are located at many of the colleges and universities in the state. Completion of these programs requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and acceptance into the college or university and graduate program. Participants will receive a master’s degree in school counseling.
