To some people, all unions have a certain stigma. Even the word "union" calls to mind images of angry picketers waving signs that scream "Strike!" But, that’s because unions don’t get a whole lot of attention unless there’s a problem. What does? Everyone knows that unions exist to unify workers, giving them a voice against and within the establishments for which they work. But does that mean unions are a good idea when it comes to self-employment?

Freelancers and Unions?

It’s not an oxymoron; there are unions made specifically for freelancers, self-employed professionals and independent contractors who walk their career paths alone. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is one well-known example of a union geared toward a career that appeals to freelancers: writing. Other groups, including the Freelancers Union, are aimed specifically at those who work alone. So, how does that work? Aren’t unions supposed to be for people who work for big corporations? Not always. Unions may represent any group of workers, even those who primarily work for themselves.
