Low wage families rather than beneficiaries are the new face of poverty in New Zealand, according to Mangere East Family Service Centre chief executive Peter Sykes.

The Sunday Star-Times spoke to one extended family of 30 members living in just two homes in the working class suburb of Mangere in South Auckland. There were padlocks on the fridges in both houses as food was rationed.
